Pakistan, Egypt Hold Urgent Talks Ahead of US-Iran Deal

(MENAFN) Pakistan's and Egypt's foreign ministers spoke by telephone for the second time within 24 hours on Sunday, holding urgent consultations on regional developments as the prospect of a landmark US–Iran agreement moved closer to reality, Pakistan's Foreign Ministry announced.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and his Egyptian counterpart Badr Abdelatty used the call to assess progress toward a potential breakthrough understanding between Washington and Tehran.

"They expressed hope that these positive developments would contribute to lasting peace, security, and stability across the region," the ministry statement said.

Pakistan, which played a pivotal mediating role in brokering a ceasefire during the US-Israeli war on Iran in April, has sustained an intensive diplomatic engagement with key regional and international partners in pursuit of a permanent resolution to the conflict that has destabilised the broader Middle East.

US President Donald Trump declared Saturday that a formal deal with Iran was on track to be signed as early as Sunday, and predicted that the Strait of Hormuz would be "open to all" in the wake of the agreement.

Tehran, however, pushed back on that timeline, indicating that the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Washington would not proceed on Sunday, while leaving open the possibility that it could be concluded within the coming days.

The region has been gripped by acute instability since US and Israeli forces launched coordinated airstrikes against Iran in late February — a move that triggered retaliatory strikes by Tehran against Israel and other regional states hosting US military assets, and set off the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most critical energy chokepoints.
